Default Rear mounting Spare tire

Yeah so my tires are too big to put a regular spare on, any ideas on where to find a rear mount to put a spare on? i know i am going to have to fab it on, weld or bolt, but i need the basic mount to do it, any suggestions?

Suspension and diagnostics plus the YJ had rectangular headlights and the TJ has round ones.
YJ = leaf springs on all corners.
TJ = coil springs on all corners.

Two brains think alike because I was thinking about adapting the wrangler tire carrier with mounting a plate over existing license plate holder, but put wrangler carrier on the driver side and get stronger lifting hatch shocks. Just a thought, might go to jy and get a old hatch and brainstorm.!!

Two great mines think alike because I was thinking also about adapting the wrangler tire mount on the hatch with some stronger lifts. I would like to know how you did it because I was going to put a plate over where the license plate go and start from there.

If you can make this work I'll give you $1. I don't think you're going to find shocks strong enough to hold it up. Besides the shocks only hold it up, you'd still have to muscle it up there until it was in the fully lifted position.

Search the fabrication section, or google it. There are threads out there.

Here is a kit that would work but you need and aftermarket bumper or need to get really creative. http://www.atozfabrication.com/store...lders-Kit.html You could probably do it yourself with a trailer spindle from Northern Tool. I personally like the latch the JCR uses on their bumpers.

I will eventually build one myself when I get done with my 914 motor swap and brush up on my welding skills. Good luck and post up when you're finished.

Seems a roof rack and or tire mount would be the best option

check out Detours Tailbone system. Uses the OE bumper skin and is strong as heck. Check my photo albums to see the full install.

a 31" will fit in the stock tire position just fine! you can fit up to a 33" in the stock tire position with moving the rear seat mounts forward a little bit.

take the place L shaped bracket off the floor that held up the original spare, turn your tire mounting surface out that way you get the center of the rim as close to the vehicle mounting bracket as you can, Then run the bolt thru a lug nut hole.

With 31's it works perfect. if you have a bigger tire then you can fold the rear seat down, remove the rear mounting brackets, mount your tire pop the seat back up and mark where you need to drill new holes, drill them, do the same to the other side, mount your brackets and put your seat back up! your done! and 1-2 does not make a big difference to the way the seat feels

You can also use a stock swing away tire carrier off an early XJ for a 31" tire. It is all bolt on. You will need the rear bumper to go with it.
