rear end noise any help

rear end noise any help
i have been hearing a howling noise in rear end that it might be the garrier bearings put it on my lift ran it in gear sounded like it was the outer axle bearing on driver side replaced outer bearings and seals replaced axles still noise took back apart looked like axle shaft was pitted where the bearing rides polished them out a bit looked alot smoother put back together drove it still howling on the outer axle maybe a little bit more now is it just a bad axle shaft oh ya it is a 94 xj with 160,000 and dana 35
