E-mail jeep.com your VIN #. They'll give you everything you need to know about your jeep.

Open the hood and look for ABS I circled. I you have that you have a Dana 35 if its just an open spot then you have a Chrysler 8.25.

Think ya mean Dana 35 there boss.
The d30 comes in all 4x4 xjs..regardless of abs or not.

Good try though.

Sorry changed yes meant to say Dana 35 but for the front in I believe in 1997 the switched from High Pinion to Low Pinion Dana 30. The only other models with different axles are the Wagoneer they had a Dana 44, Comanches that were turned into campers. They had a Dana 60 rear with I believe a Dana 44 front. Best way I can describe them are the Centurion of Jeep, good luck finding one.

Only the 00 and 01 models had a low pinion. Before that, all were high pinion. Some of them had a vacuum disconnect for the 4wd in the earlier years.

00 and 01s have the LP D30s.

Most other XJs have either the 8.25 or the D35 (87-89 with towing package might have a D44)

Most are also either geared with 3.07 (manual) or 3.55 (auto). All 4 bangers have 4.10s.

The 8.25 did NOT come with the XJs with ABS. If you have ABS you have a d35.

If you don't have abs you can have either. Get under there and look. Post pictures and we can judge it.

97+ XJs have 29 spline shafts and 97- have 27 spline shafts. (In reference to the 8.25)

D35s have 27 spline shafts as well but the 27 splined 8.25s are stronger than the 27 splined D35s.

Also note some of this may not be 100% correct, so before you take my word for it search search search.

OP, since it can be a tad confusing if you aren't used to it, here are the two rear axles that came on a '99 side-by-side:

The left is a Chrysler 8.25, the right is a Dana 35.

Earlier years actually have a range of gearing on the 4.0s and V6s. This includes the elusive 3.73:1 "towing package" option, as well as an obscure "fuel economy" package.

Only manual 2.5L gassers had the 4.10 gears, automatic-equipped models actually rocked 4.56s. The 4-cylinder diesel engines came with the same transmissions as the 4.0s.

To expand on this, some 1996 models were built with random parts. Late build '96 may actually have a 29-spline, and the only way to tell is to rip it apart and count.

That's great news!

So if i can find an automatic 4banger at the junkyard with both axles in tact i can guarantee that they have 4.56 gears?

That would be SWEET. Would be way cheaper than paying a gear shop to install gears. 4.56s would run my 32s way better than my 3.55s.

They're pretty rare lol. You're more likely to find a TJ with that config than an XJ, and those are rare too! I think the tranny was a 32RE in later years

But if I do find any year 2.5 xj auto it's a 4.56 correct? (Obviously assuming someone didnt swap it out.) You know what axle comes in the rear on these?

Also does the same go with the manual except its. 4.10s and not 4.56s?

I thought a TJ axle wouldn't bolt under an xj because the xj is wider than the TJ. Or is that not true?

Not sure about the year-to-year changes but 4.56:1 was indeed the ratio of choice for a gutless 2.5L and 3-speed slushbox. Same really applies to all of the other configurations really, past the Stage 1 and Renix phases you can expect one of those configs to match those ratios but you should really verify.

TJ front axles are direct bolt-on. In 2000 Chrysler started installing the same LP D30 on XJs and TJs. The rear axles are identical barring the obvious leaf/coil and shock differences. So D35 gears are D35 gears.

The tricky bit is the front axle. HP D30s had reverse-cut gears, whereas all the LPs are standard cut. So if you wanted TJ gears you'd need to fit an LP axle. However - YJs are HP D30s with reverse cut too...

As for the rear, finding a 2.5L gas automatic with the C8.25 is going to be like a leprechaun riding a unicorn-drawn cloud with Atlantis stamped in his passport. Well, ok maybe not THAT difficult. The leprechaun got detained at the border anyway.
