x257 on u joints. almost always. and for 20 bucks if it aint the issue, at least you didnt put in a new ring and pinion just to find it was 20 dollar u joints.

If you do the U-Joints you might as well lube the splines in the rear drive shaft.... that could also be an issue....mine also has a loud clunk when shifting from reverse to drive, but it is more in the middle where the tranny is... possibly a transmission mount.... seems to shift kinda hard from first to second gear as well.
