Rear Diff. Fluid Change
Hey everyone, i noticed that my real diff has a slight leak(like one or two spots on the driveway after sitting a day). I figured its probably a good idea to put new fluid in anyway so i was wondering if there are any tips to what i need to do. My dad(who will be watching me change this most likely) is concerned i wont be able to get the correct fluid back in, but from what i have read, a small funnel/pump will do that with no problem.
Forgot to add: 2000 XJ Sport, with the Chrysler 8.25(I think, I'll have to double check)
The only other questions i have are:
What type of sealer do you use/any brand better than the others?
What type of sythentic lubricant do you guys use (i want to switch to all synthetics for this vehicle) and how much?
Final, is the front as easily accessible as the back?
(Links to sites i looked at, seemed to have good enough and well documented for a newb like myself:
http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc/diff-1.htm
http://www.getahelmet.com/jeeps/maint/diff_fluid/
Thanks,
Hedbutter

Is there no exact amount of fluid to enter? In your write up it said it took almost two bottles until full, do you just fill it to the drain or is there an exact number of quarts you need. Sorry for the newb question, id rather ruin the rearend though
Would 4 bottles of Diff fluid be enough for the front and back?
Thanks again and sorry for the newb question

Ok sweet, and would it be a safe call to think that any autoparts store would have gaskets or should i call ahead of time to make sure?
Just looked online for gaskets for a store near my house, they dont have the front gasket. Is there a front gasket? Last question, i promise

One of the most useful things on the website. Though my diff. took less fluid than what they have posted because the new fluid started leaking from the fill hole. But they are very close.

Yep, I bought both of mine from Auto Zone. They carry Fel-Pro, which, IMHO, is one of the best. I hear good things about the lube locker ones as well, no need for sealant with them. They have a silicone bead built into the gasket, and are reusable. The only down side, is they cost more. I didn't plan on being back in mine for awhile, so a regular gasket would work just fine. HTH!!
