Rear axle fell out on highway

My buddy just called telling me that his rear axel just fell out of his 1989 diesel jeep wagoneer. It was the back passengers side. Hoping someone can answer some ?s . Does anyone know what kind of rear end was on the wagoneers? Why/ how would this happen? And does anyone have parts that they want to sell.

1989 D35 was still non c-clip I thought?? Thus it must not be a 35. **Edit: Shouldn't be a D35

The whole axle? Damn.

Yeah, no kidding!

I've seen that happen with a chevy with c-clips. The "end nub" between the clip groove and the spider shaft was too short...

89....maybe the bolts holding the bearing, or the "weeding ring", (that's pressed on the axle) let go.....
