Default Really strange issue with my 97 xj...

Ok so its been getting worse.. now its so bad that I dont even want to drive it. WHen It warms up (driving it or just sitting in the driveway) Takes about 15 minutes. The Idle drops off and it sounds like a race motor with a big ol cam. If you give it alittle gas, it clears itself up and runs like new. I took off the throttle body and cleaned it up and the IAC and it still does it. Any Ideas?

Once the engine reaches normal operating temps the PCM switches from Open to Closed loop and begins monitoring the O2 Sensors.

Got a check engine light (CEL) on?

Post up all the codes, and just plain Frank is fine.

Thanks Frank. The only code I have on my right now is this one: P1698
It is a confirmed code, with the voltage being out of range on the primary and secondary 02's. So that makes 3 confirmed codes. My cat kissed a couple rocks in the past weeks, but the secondary o2 doesnt really do anything with metering the fuel...

Open Loop and Closed Loop.
During Open Loop modes, the powertrain control
module (PCM) receives input signals and responds
only according to preset PCM programming. Input
from the oxygen (O2S) sensors is not monitored during
Open Loop modes.
During Closed Loop modes, the PCM will monitor
the oxygen (O2S) sensors input. This input indicates
to the PCM whether or not the calculated injector
pulse width results in the ideal air-fuel ratio. This
ratio is 14.7 parts air-to-1 part fuel. By monitoring
the exhaust oxygen content through the O2S sensor,
the PCM can fine tune the injector pulse width. This
is done to achieve optimum fuel economy combined
with low emission engine performance.

P1698 No CCD Messages Received From PCM Bus communication failure to PCM. A "Companion DTC" was set in both the ECM and PCM.
Sounds like a dirty connector is preventing DTC code from being properly reported.

Can't hurt to pull and clean the PCM connectors and the gauge cluster connectors.

I'll do that and report back...
