Radiators
Is there any consensus on a reliable mid range radiator. I purchased this 2001 Cherokee Sport, 4.0L in December 2017. Cosmetically a Cherry but some mechanical problems going in. Paperwork shows four radiators replaced in the last five years. A week ago, another blown radiator. Problem is there was no indication of overheating. Engine temp warmed up holds at 210, regardless RPM's and restricted air flow (blanket over front grill.) Water pump is only a year old, everything about the cooling system seems okay and yet radiator is leaking like a sieve at the tubes entering the passenger side of the pans. My thought is that it's just been cheap, crappy radiators. No indication of brand or model number on paperwork or on the current radiator. It is plastic end caps and single row. Any thoughts?

Why are you restricting the airflow? And most of the inexpensive radiators are just that.. And your not going to find any much else in the industry that isn't plastic tanks and single row for cheap cheap. If you want better gotta spend the money.

I picked up my '00 about 5 years ago. Kinda running and not really driveable. Picked it up on the cheaper side. Anyway one of the things I had to do was put in a new radiator. I bought a Napa one which I am pretty sure is a rebranded Spectra. The only time I see 210 is if I am running with my air on. Otherwise want to say about 200. Not that it can't crap out tomorrow but so far so good.

It all so has a life time warranty . I all so have a 2001 XJ and I use my AC a lot and never had a heating problem .

Thanks for all the input everybody. I'm still researching the why and of course which way to go on a replacement. I took the leaker to a radiator repair guy today and ponied up the money to have it pressure tested, I knew it leaked and suspected it was tubes to pan but I wanted to know where and how bad. This guy has been in the radiator business since we were both in our twenties, a long, long time ago. Before he even tested it he told me where he thought it would be leaking and he was correct. Third tube down on the intake side, the tube to pan joint was just pouring. He said electro-chemical erosion on the interior of aluminum radiators, especially at the intake side, where the hot coolant out of the cast iron block first hits the aluminum is a very common problem. Since this is the fifth radiator in as many years he suggested having the coolant tested for contamination. Better to solve he problem rather than keep throwing radiators at it. Laboratory test kit is fifteen bucks from the local Caterpillar service center. The Cat service guys said they had a problem some years ago with a couple of models eating up aluminum thermostat housings from the inside, and their fix was to go through and ground everything; the design relied on the starter ground and it just wasn't adequate. Solder wick is cheap and the radiator mounting is fairly well isolated, so maybe the Caterpillar guys are onto something.

The OEM radiator in my 97 XJ last 21 years! Just failed a pressurized test (16 psi) due to a crack on the passenger side end tank. Wish I could find another one of those! I'm taking a gamble on the Spectra CU1193. It's got decent reviews on Amazon, and the price was right - $67.46.
