I looked in my 1998 Jeep service manual for a drawing I could scan and send to you. Unfortunately they don't even show the headlight bucket, just the bucket with the lamp already installed and a line to the rad support.

The spring should connect to the headlight bucket on the lower front outside. There should be a raised area lower out side behind the bucket for the other end of the spring to connect to.

Both ends of the spring will have to be connected before the bucket is installed.

I connected to the spring to what appeared to be the right place, and from what you described, it sounds like it was right. The problem I'm having is that the spring forces the whole bucket up into the opposite corner of the opening and tilts the light slightly forward making the vehicle sort of look like it's cross-eyed. The headlight aiming bolts are attached but I cannot get the light into the center of the opening. I looked in the manual for the vehicle, and the repair manual for the vehicle and nothing about this was to be found.
