i've never really had issues with mine.... i run a 231 in 2 of my cherokee's and i run a 242 in my comanche, the difference between them is
the 231 is 2wd-4wd-N-4wdL
the 242 is 2wd-4wd part-time-4wd fulltime-N-4wdL
part-time is better because you can run it all the time and it won't hurt the t-case... if you run 4wd all the time in the 231 (like winter driving) it can cause long term effects (wears things out faster)
"don't confuse this with paranoya about using your 4wd on the trails"
there are some other differences like chain strength and sun-gear size/strength but as far issues or problematics... i would have to say there really aren't any

Many of the "problems" stem from not understanding how they work, such as shifting in and out of 4WD and low range. Another group of problems stem from linkage adjustments, which is a design problem. If you keep oil in it it will last a long time.
