Question about transmission
OK, I have a 2000 XJ, just installed new engine, radiator, water pump, and AC. Changed all fluids. I was towing with this, after 4 hours, going up a hill, I started to smoke from transmission fluid. I think it might have been the front seal, but I can't tell. It stopped leaking after cooling. I installed B&M supercooler and temp gauge for tranny. I need to finish towing home, about 10 hours with my trailer. I don't want to drop the transmission yet. I have been driving the Jeep around empty now, and no leaks, and not overheating, but I haven't tried the trailer yet. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? I might put in some Lucus tranny oil. My trailer is not too heavy,it is a 4 X6 enclosed trailer, filled with tools and books for the most part. I am guessing around 2000 pounds. Should I service the transmission here ( I am in Boise and heading to Northern California) or will I be OK to limp home if I keep the tranny fluid levels full and the temperature low? Just wanted to get some advice from the experts out there. Thanks. Also, there is a guy here selling a 2000 auto tranmission with 80K miles for 250. Mine has 160K, should I think about replacing the tranny. I just figured that if I have to do the front seal, maybe I should just replace the tranny in the process. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Have you checked your trans fluid? Is it burned? If not, feel free to tow the trailer, but do it in 3 and not D.
If you're feeling uncomfortable about your trans and have the extra $, go ahead and buy the used trans for $250 and take it with you.

Going to try
I think I will buy the tranny and go for it. All fluids holding good still after a few days driving. Temps staying below 160 too.

My '96 blew some trans fluid smoke out the back more than 10 years ago while going up a long grade at 65mph. I stopped and bought some ATF at the next gas station, but it didn't appear to be low. I never saw it do that again, and the trans has been fine ever since except for a shift solenoid that I replaced in 5/11.
Yours may be fine, but just in case it isn't, that spare trans could be insurance.

Thanks. I am nervous about being stuck in the middle of the Nevada desert, but I will pack extra water along with the tranny fluid. Thanks again.
