quarters in transfer case problems?
so think i got a real oddball problem here....
my 4 low has not been working. 4 hi neutral and 2 are all fine. the issue is that it will go into 4 low, but it pops out and grinds after going only a few feet even on flat ground and just letting it crawl at idle. the previous owner kept a good amount of change in the ash tray, enough to brake one of the legs on the ash tray cover. so when my 4 low started to give me problems, i took out my repair manual and one of the possible causes could be interference with console. so i pop off the cover on the console and check out whats going on around the lever. sure enough there is a good amount of spare change jammed around in there. i was able to get some of it out but there are still a few quarters jammed in there at the very back right where the 4 low is engaging. today i am going to get crafty trying to fish all the spare change out and hopefully i wont have to remove my entire center console. i also found some change around the gear selector, park, drive, ect. i really hope that this is my problem and something is not seriously wrong with my transfer case. anyone else had this problem? i have searched many transfer case issues and have found none like mine. also just curious if any of you with a 97 or new cherokee pop off there covers and see any change down there? if any of you have had a similar problem but a different solution that would be great too, i just figured i would start a threat cus i cant find anything like it on google, here, or even on jeep forum. thanks for any help

do whatever ya gotta do to get that change outta there.
i know on mine, if i dont give the lever a good hard yank into 4Lo, it will pop out into Nuetral after only going a few feet. it's a pretty safe bet the quarters in ur shifter are your problem.
look on the bright side, you've now got quarters to wash ur jeep with after gettin dirty.

Not only both my jeeps, but my Scout 2 all like to pop out of 4 Low. Besides collecting your new found fortune, make sure it's adjusted. Maybe as the mounts age it...never-mind
One of those flex cable deals with the three grabbers might be handy. Harbor Freight?

i just finished getting about 3 free dolars. one penny was bent up almost like a top with a point. im assuming this was my problem. i will test it tomorrow on a nice labor day adventure. i really hope it works cus off roading in 4 hi is far less than desirable. i used some good old red neck engineering with a compressor to blow the coins into sight and then a combination of needle nose pliers and a screw driver with duct tape on the end to fish them out. i bet some people have had the same problem so now people with the same problem can read this and see if it works for them wheln they search. ill crawl around a parking lot later day in 4 low and see how long it sticks for, hopefully it wont jump out of gear once though

No, No, not on my account! I thought MAYBE a good mount could squish enough to let things shift a bit, then changed my mind. Somebody here will know better than me...I would look at the linkage, check grommets, adjust it to go in more better.
Mainly wanted to mention mine do it too, and the cable grabber. D.

mine literally will go into 4 lo, then pops out a second after you but it in reverse. before i even let my foot off the brake
did you end up having loose mounts or what on your cherkee, i think im going to have to do the whole re adjust and tighten the mounts thing
