pulling oil pan off...

do i have to pull the engine to pull the oil pan off an 87 xj? i have stripped and broken bolts in the block for the oil pan.

you dont have to take the engine out....i just did my pan gasket not long ago.

i took off the tires, took off all the steering and suspension components including the lower control arms and let the axle hang all the way down, otherwise the pan wont clear the pickup tube....dont take the pump off cause i found out the hard way the new pump gasket only comes with a new pump. unless your going to replace the pump too then go ahead and remove for easier removal of the pan

• Disconnect Negative (-) battery cable
• Jack up Jeep and support with jack stand by the frame
• Drain oil
• Remove starter * (torque front bolt 30ft.lb/rear 35ft.lb)
• Loosen oil pan bolts*
• Support oil pan with floor jack
• Remove oil pan bolts
• To get oil pan out - lower the back half of the oil pan and pull in out under the transmission with the front axle jack up (this will allow the axle to move forward)

that doesnt sound too bad, i've got a couple mechanics at work to give me a hand if needed so hopefully i can figure it out fairly easy. hope it works! its pretty embarassing the amount of oil i go through in a week due to it leaking out:sad:

You might wanna be sure is JUST the oil pan gasket.
Could be oil filter adapter o-rings, rms, valve cover gasket....

Go with Felpro if i were you.

I replaced all my gaskets as well, clean and dry now :cool2:
