Proper rear brake shoe mounting

Default Proper rear brake shoe mounting

I am getting ready to redo the rear brakes on my '93 XJ. The set of shoes I got has one shoe which is fully lined and the other is maybe 2/3 lined. In looking at 2Evil4U's wonderful step-by-step thread in the "How to" section of the forum I notice he has the fully lined shoe on the front side of the wheel and the 2/3 lined in the back. Does everyone agree with this choice? (I know I should have gotten the more expensive set with fully lined shoes for both sides but you know how it is )

Short shoe goes facing forward and long shoe to the rear. The other guy is wrong and servo action will not work correctly the way he has it.

Not sure I'm following that. Other than the length of the lining attached the metal shoes are identical physically. The brass looking pin coming off the one shoes comes loose with them so it can be mounted on either shoe facing either direction and end up on the same side facing the same direction. Only the amount of lining on the shoe would change

So assuming the photo I have attached is the passenger side that is the correct way the long and short lining should be positioned to work correctly. Interesting. I am use to selling only sets of shoes where the lining is the same length on both shoes

Since our slave cylinder is up top, the shoe with the shorter lining goes forward.

Correct but your adjuster with star wheel is installed the wrong way.

As others have said that is the passenger side. Make sure the star adjuster is not only oriented correctly to work with the adjuster lever but also that you have the correct one on each side. They are threaded specific for right and left.

Excellent point ^. I'm not sure I've ever paid any attention. I just wipe the grass off, clean the threads, apply anti-seize to the threads and re-install. (I've never turned the car around in the process!)

Got it. When I bought them on the Pep Boys website I saw it showed a right and left but now looking at the boxes they are not clearly labeled in any way which is which side. I'll check them out and mark them myself before messing with this on the weekend
