Default Problems with brake power cherokee 1991

My brake pedal has suddently become very hard. And I have lost brake power. I am thinking it is the vacum system. There is no wizzling noices from the system when the engine is on. And no sounds when Im braking.

Is it the brake booster? And is that a difficult thing to fix?

Any help is highly appreciated:-)

Best, Thomas

A bad brake booster is very easy to replace. When I got my current XJ ('91) the brake booster was shot and it didn't make any noises either. Just disconnect the brake pedal linkage, unbolt the master cylinder, unbolt the four bolts on the inside of the firewall, carefully move the MC out of the way (if you don't disconnect the brake lines, you shouldn't need to bleed the brakes) and pull the old booster out. Installation is reverse. Fairly easy (at least mine was - remember that EVERY XJ is different).

Hey - thx! Sounds ok:-)

Is the brake booster on the inside of the firewall?
Cos' i have only seen one before in a 97 Cherokee with ABS. That one was fairly big and under the hood. There is nothing looking like that in my 91' :-)

Thanks again....

i believe mine is bad too, even with new brakes and bleeding, the pedal still goes almost to the floor and barely stopping most off the time. thanx for the info!

Welcome to CF. Since you aren't seeing a brake booster under the hood, you probably have the Bendix 9 ABS braking system. This will explain it, and give the diagnostic procedures, repairs, bleeding procedures, and codes for it. >->Jeep Bendix 9 Antilock Brakes

*NOTE: The Bendix 9 ABS braking system is supposed to have a life time warranty from the dealer.

That is indicative of a bad master cylinder not the booster.

Today i drove in it again..and the brakes blocked.

The "check anti blocking" warning is on. Red light!

What do you think about that?

This covers certain '89-'91 Cherokees and Waggoneers w/ABS. >->'89-'91 Jeep Bendix 9 Antilock Brakes

Pedal to the floor, bad master or leak some where, like rear cylinder. Not being able to push the pedal, as stated, bad booster.

Cool you are all awesome:-) And happy new year! I read that some guy just disconnected the ABS under the backseat - and then drove without?

I also read that one guy just pulled the ABS fuse and then he was satisfied with hus brakes again.

Any of you think that is a Quick fix? And a not dangerous one?

After searching a bit on different forums it seems like most of the jeep owners with the Bendix 9 or 10 reccomends that you change the braking system entirely with a newer one.

It shoul be fairly easy/cheap and much more sustainable.

Let me hear all you masters opinions:-)

I am a jeep rookie but i really love the car - i have 2 new cars but only want to drive this.

It really has a spirit:-)

Best, Tom

um.. take it to the dealer and have the recall done.... if your jeep is covered under the recall... that is the best way to fix it...

Is your brake fluid dirty? mine did the same thing. I took my master cylinder off, cleaned it out, replaced the fluid, bled the brakes and problem solved
