Problems after replacing Power Steering....
 

Hello,
I'm new to the forum and have some questions.
Last weekend I replaced my power steering pump because the old one was worn, leaking, and very noisy. After a little bit of work, I finished it and went for a test drive. To my disappointment, I had two problems: The power steering was not working unless I revved the engine past 1500 rpm and the engine was overheating. I didn't have either one of these problems before I replaced the pump. I have gone back to make sure I didn't put anything back wrong or backwards. The truck was parked for about three weeks before I got to work on it so I guess it's possible the thermostat might be stuck, so I'm going to replace it to see if this fixes the overheating, but I just can't figure out about the pump. Maybe defective from the auto parts?
I would appreciate any ideas/suggestions.
By the way, my truck is an '88, 4.0, 4WD, standard tranny.

Did you get all the air out of the psteering system?

I did not. I figured once I got it all together, by just cycling the system I'd be able to get rid of the air in the lines. Is there a procedure for doing this?

Open the cap on the power steering pump fill with fluid and turn the wheel full lock left and right about 5 times each it should bleed the system have some to watch the fluid so it doesnt drop to low

I am having the same problem and I already cycled to full lock much more then 5 times.. Any other ideas?

possible defective part. I went through 2 of them before I got a decent one.

did you check to see if the belt was tight enouf....the reason I ask is because my was not....

I didnt replace the pump, just the lines from the pump to the steering box. After replacing them and refilling with fluid and cranking to lock more then enough times, my power steering wont work.. Im guessing there cant really be anything else wrong with it other then a pump. And ill check my belt, i didnt consider that

I'm not sure but it seems like I read this in another thread. But turning lock to lock won't bleed correctly if the engine is running. Maybe try turning just short of full lock with the engine running, or full lock to lock with the engine off.

That might not be true, but its free and easy so worth a shot

and can bleed system with front axles on jackstands, engine off, turn wheel lock to lock and bubbles should surface

Ill give it a shot, thanks guys. I did bleed it with the motor running. Didnt even think anything of it.

Is it whining really badly when trying to steer?

making noise AND over heating ?? Check belt tension ? I had to tighten mine much tighter than i thought i should. i bought the cheep belt,,WRONG answer. now i get go buy the good belt and do it all over again.?.?
