This is probably obvious..

I don't know how to get a code out of my check engine light from my 1994 Cherokee. Anyone mind telling me how I can do that? Thank you

Go to O'Reilly's and ask to use their scan tool.

XJCountry94 12-19-2011 11:25 PM

Haha my mom actually works there. She said she could do it if the diagnostic port was inside the jeep or not buried under the hood. I don't know where the port is though.

You don't need a scan tool to check codes on a OBD-1 Jeep or Chrysler......or a GM for that matter(a paper clip will do)

Your's will self-diagnose by turning the ignition on and off 3 times within 8 seconds.

ON-------OFF-----ON--------OFF--------ON
then count the flashes and wright them down.
Codes will always be 2 digit codes.
You will get code 11 (computer reads no crank signal)
and code 55 (end of code sequence)

Everything between code 11, and code 55 will be your list of trouble codes.
You can google the results, or Haynes manual has them all listed.

yes, for the code 11, your check engine light will flash once - pause - flash once.
code 55 will flash 5 times - pause - flash 5 times. code 55 is end of code sequence, so it's not really a code, it's to tell you there are no more codes.

so using that logic, count the flashes - pause - flashes for your code, then google jeep codes for your results.

He doesn't want to read it, he wants to clear it. I believe you can also just disconnect your battery for a few minutes and reconnect.

caged 12-20-2011 10:27 AM

you need a scan tool to clear it. but if the problem is still there, the engine light will just come back.

TheJerm 12-20-2011 10:43 AM

You dont need a scan tool, just disconnect the battery

Gee oh Dee 12-20-2011 10:50 AM

Fix the problem first.

I think I'm getting a map sensor reading from my check engine light but it's hard to tell with the way it flashes. Anyone know where the diagnostic port is?

mr baer 12-20-2011 08:02 PM

Its deff not under the hood, I think it might be down the bottom of the dash on the drivers side but I cant be sure, Ive always used the flashing light on mine.

OBD 1 is differant than OBD 2 , which is under dash, do you have a manual to take a look see? I do beleive OBD 1 plug is in the engine compartment though not 100% sure though.
