Price for Dana 35 replacement
 

My Dana 35 on my 95 Cherokee appears be failing. Decision time! I don't know at this point if it's the ring and pinion or carrier bearings. How much should it cost to buy a used one and have a mechanic put it in? How much to rebuild the one I've got?

Don't waste your time or $ on the Dana 35.It's a turd.

Go to the JY & get a '97-'01 8.25 & throw it in yourself.It will take you about 3 hours if you have the tools to do it with & if you've never worked on a car-EVER.If you don't have tools,go buy some.You can get a axle & tools cheaper than you can pay for labor.

You also get a warm fuzzy feeling when the job is done.If, by the off chance, it's in there wrong,you only have youself to blame.

Like I tell ALOT of people.If you can put gas in your car,you can do more than you think.

BTW, a rear 8.25 should be around $100,give or take.

Definitely don't put another d35 in there if you have the choice. They don't magically blow up like stone people make them out to, but if you can replace it with a Chrysler 8.25 I would.

Diff swap.
 

I'm not afraid of doing it myself as long as it is direct bolt on. Any tips? What will I need from the YJ?

Disconnect the brake line and the u bolts and carry it away. And replace the same way.

Oh and disconnect the shocks too.

and if youre going the jy way make sure the axle isnt junked.

What he said,but you'll also need new U-bolts.The 8.25 uses larger ones.Other than that it's a direct swap.

Don't get one from a YJ, they're spring under. You need one from a TJ or LJ. Even MJs are spring under.

a d35 from a tj or lj would require much more cutting to make fit than one from an mj or yj

Sure, let's cut 4 control arm brackets off instead of welding new perches on.

The most noticable difference is the flat lip on the bottom of an 8.25.

Bleeding the brakes will be the hardest part of the whole thing and could likely turn into a nightmare. Once you're done with the swap enlist somebody's help that has done it before.

It's JY for Junk Yard, not YJ.

If you're getting one from the JUNK YARD they're easy to find. Almost every one you check will be an 8.25. You also need to make sure it's the same gear ratio.

Sorry, I was thinking about the 30 when I posted from a TJ or LJ. Get one from an XJ if possible. They're direct bolt in, as long as you get the correct gears and u-bolts. That was where I was going until I picked up my 8.8 for $100.
