Price check: D30 Pinion bearing and seal repair
So I need to have my pinion bearing and seal replaced on my D30. I do not want to do this my self due to the crush sleeve, torquing, and making sure its done right.
What is the average price to have this done at a shop?
I just want to make sure I don't get ripped off...
Thanks!

I have to do the same...
I want to do it myself, but with no garage and 40* weather out...I dont think its gonna happen.
And just callled a 4x4 shop...but the F*$@!%& refused to give me an estimate.
Even when I told them to quote high!?
So as far as getting ripped off...
Ide say go for a garage you trust, over a garage with the lowest per hour rate.
But thats my opinion...

Based on your signature (91 XJ) you should not have a crush sleeve D30.
Please confirm for me for sure what D30 you have .... and I'll send you a PM with a price for the parts, at the least. I can recommend a friend in Lambertsville area. But I don't know how far that is from Battle Creek.
Avg price is anywhere between 150-300 per axle.

Dana 30 don't have a crush sleeve but if you haven't set up a ring and pinion I would suggest a shop. Not counting parts expect about $200.

99 and newer do. Axle could have been swapped at some point ... hence my asking.
This wouldn't be like a regular R&P setup. Depth and backlash have already been done, you're just swapping the bearings. The only thing that needs to be "checked" is pinion preload.

How would you go about, checking/figuring this pinion preload?
Or do I need some sort of special tool?
I found a spare D30 (brake to brake) within working models years, in good condition for $50.
Should I just get that, and then have my previous axle rebuilt on this side?

Assuming you have the shim preload (pre 99) ... the only special tools you need are a micrometer (measuring the shims) and an inch-lb torque wrench. An impact gun and some kind of fixture to hold the yoke down would be nice too.
For $50 bucks ... it's worth getting the working spare that way you can practice a few times (on the current one) and ask questions as you go. Reading the FSM would go a long ways in explaining the process for you.
Once you research it up and read .... then ask questions for any specific questions you might have.
