Pre '96 gas tank skid on post '96
I know a bunch of guys think that the pre '97 gas tank skids will work on the new body style and to be honest I thought the same thing. After I found one in the junkyard and got it for 6.99 I quickly found out that it would take some modifcations to make it fit.
So the post '96 Jeep seemed to lengthen the gas tank a few inches.
Heres how I made mine work
So the mounting hole are the same so dont worry about re-drilling holes. and yes the skid plate goes over the hitch.
Heres where you gotta do some cutting. You have to trim off about 2 inches off the back of the skid then make 2 relief cuts and grab some vice grips and bend it down. Sense I have an OEM hitch im not too concerned about things coming into contact with the back part of the tank.
You can see in the following pictures where the relief cuts are and where you have to trim. Also note the curve of the skid and how if you did not mod it it would come into contact with the tank.
Overall its not very hard to modify. I used a 4.5" angle grinder with a cut off wheel.
Lastly a couple words of advice....
When mounting the skid do one side at a time. Do this by taking out the 2 mounting bolts on one side while on the other side use your OEM bottle jack to support it. Just be carefull cause it could fall on you.
Hope this helps guys.
