Power Steering/Rack and Pinion Problem?

This has been happening for a while now. When i steer around turns it sort of fights back, and when im coming out of a turn it skips back rather than going in one smooth, fluid motion..

It has always been stiff as far as steering goes though, we have a 98 ZJ that steers much easier than my xj.. i have never driven an XJ other than mine so i dont know if this is normal? or a problem... Im dont know if i have a bad pump or if my rack and pinion is sticking or what!

My XJ is turning into a lemon! any help is greatly appreciated

Best Reguards,
-Roger

had that happen. This worked for me.. suck the old fluid out of the P/S resivior and dump a bottle of Lucas P/S fliud in. When I did that I got not even a mile down the road and the problem went away. If that dosint work then your pump is ready to call it quits.

Gunk also makes a auto trans stop leak that works wonders for reconditioning these old worn parts, it fixed mine for 99 cents a quart.

sounds like a normal occurance for a SFA 4x4 vehicle...

EDIT: forgot to mention, jeep xj's dont use a rack and pinion style steering. i dont think any older jeep did, maybe the new ones do.
