power steering pump replacement
 

Should i get a new reservoir when i replace the pump? Should i get anything else as well. Like hoses and filter and maybe a pulley. mine has been whining for awhile. Now its time for a replacement. I would just like to get as much done as i can right now. I don't have the money to replace the steering box yet. Thanks for the advice.

Personally, I would get pump w/ reservoir. But if you can remove old reservoir w/o damage... by all means..resuse it.

Some 4.0L came with a plastic pulley..ewwww
Our 91 Laredo did..cracked it while doing something else.
Pulley is a good idea IF yours looks nasty.

Either way, invest/rent P/S pump pulley remover. You will NEVER get it off any other way....TRUST me on THAT. the AutoZone I frequent has them for rental.
Good idea IF you never plan on doing this ever again.

Check your hoses. Now is a good time for replacement as the hardest part of replacement (removal from pump) will be so much easier since you are replacing pump.

Lastly: Serpentine belt. Check it also. You have to remove it to replace pump.
If it needs replacing...do it now.

Anything else anyone can think of?????

The pulley just does not want to come off. I am thinking it has been on there forever so i am just going to give up on it. I wish i would have just checked on getting one of them instead of pulling it off. for twice the rental fee i could have a new one. Should have checked that first i guess.

The Chrysler service manual states in bold letters not to reuse the pully on the 4.7

Power steering pulleys need a puller made for the purpose. It will cost you $20 - $40.

DO you know any puller in particular? There are different size pullers and I wanted to get the right one (if i order online).

i have always just picked up used steering pumps with resivoirs and pulleys when i needed one.

the one i have now is plastic, and i drilled a hole in it with the hole saw for ease of mounting in my 96.


now im scurred the pulley will fail

o'reilly's has a pump with res. for around $75.

I bought one from Summit Racing that does them all.

A new pulley from autozone is only 15 bucks. It's not worth the hassle to try and take a really old one off.

I am a newcomer to JeepForum. I will be making an attempt to get my old '92 XJ back up and running. It has been parked for almost a year after two years of abuse and poor maintenance by a family member. I've swaped out an old fuel pump, depleted motor mounts, and have noticed power steering fluid dripping from the reservoir. It is cracked. I had hoped that I could get just the reservoir off without disassembling too much but it seems the whole pump has to come off in order to get the reservoir off. Any suggestions are welcome.

You can usually do pretty well with a junk yard replacement. Power steering pumps normally last a very long time (as long as they were not allowed to run dry). You should be able to get one with a pully and reservoir for less than $30.

Also, if you can't find a good one off a low mileage Cherokee, ask one of the counter guys at the wrecking yard to take a look in the Hollander Interchange Manual to find out what other vehicles use the same one.

When I installed power steering on my former CJ I wound up getting a pump off a Honda. I was a little worried at first but it was a Made in USA Saginaw power steering pump and it was on my CJ for about six-years before I sold it.

What 4.7???????:wacko:??___ Replace all that you can afford to do.
