Power steering pump bleeding
My power steering pump froze up, not a big deal to change it out but am not sure the proper way to bleed it. I have heard two ways, jack up front of vehicle with engine off and turn steering back and forth about 20 times or the other way is not to jack it up engine running and move steering back and forth. Anyone now the right way for the XJ?

How I have been told to do it is after install of new pump and all hoses are tight and sealed is fill the resevoir then turn the steering left to right till no air bubbles are present. Have been told to do it with tires off the ground and on the ground. Also do this with the engine running..:) Should only take a few cycles to bleed the air out.

I did it off the ground with the engine running not sure if it was right or not but it worked so I assume I did it right.

so pretty much....
1. fill fluid to full/cold mark 2. start engine 3. turn wheels lock to lock 4. check fluid level? do you keep the cap off while turning lock to lock to let the air out? i just replaced the steering box and want to be safe and done. |

You actually don't want to hit your locks. You want to go back and forth almost lock to lock.
other thing i would say is that after the P/S fluid heats up and cools check it again. and again after a few trips just to make sure |
so....cap off while doing all this for the air to escape right?

i was wondering if any one has had any problems with this. I just put in a new pump. filled with fluid and did it both ways. i still have intermittent problems with losing power steering and sometime it takes both hands ( even while moving ) to turn jeep. i have a 1998 Cherokee sport. any suggestions?
