power issue 1997 Jeep Cherokee Laredo 6cyc 4wd
 

I have a problem.. I am driving my car and get a beep then a check gauges light on. Looking i see that my volt meter is not working it is sitting below the 9 range.

so i did what anyone else would do i changed the battery and the alternator.
drove car for 2 days no problems. while driving the car i see that the volt meter gauge is below 14 car running and doing 80 on the parkway.
then the beep came back and you see the needle and check gauge light on again. Lunch time took the car to advanced auto they ran a test on the alternator as well as the battery and starter no issue other then poor power feed to starter. granted when i drove it over for them to test it did not have any issues the volt meter was running fine at 14. they talked me into new battery terminals so i bought them and replaced when i got home.

needless to say the issue happened on the way home. changed the terminals when i got home and still same issue. now it is still showing under 9 on the volt meter.

i am wanting to get this Jeep back on the road is this a short?

I need some new things to try.

Clean all the grounds, keep an eye out for any connections with funky green schmutz on them.

yea, it sounds like a bad connection or loose/degraded wire somewhere

Is it a big job to change out the battery main wires? you know from the battery down to the starter and the ground?

Not if you have the wire.

On to the next step.
 

Hey all what i found is all the connections are great cleaned tested and looking like new.

Doing a little more research i found that from 1991 and on that the regulator in the alternator is no longer part of the alternator. They put that control into the
computer mounted on the firewall. So i have ordered a item that will by pass the
computer and control the alternator out side of the computer portion of the car.

they have better ones but right now i want to see if this is the true issue.

That sounds like a BAD idea.

FWIW: There is a temp sensor under the battery also sensed by that same computer. It cuts back on the charge if the battery gets hot. To prove how well it all works, I still have my OEM battery from 1997. Terminals needs cleaning but still starts fine.

my 97 was having electrical problems as well even with a new battery and alternator. It turned out to be a loose ground.
