Popping out of 4wd?? Annoying!!!!

Hey guys for some reason every time I'm in 4wd hi or low and I get under any sort of decent load hills etc it makes a huge pop/clunk then goes to 2wd for a second then locks back in? Really odd anyone else have a similar issue or a fix??? Thanks!!!!

Check your motor mounts and trans mount first. If they are worn, the drivetrain can move enough to pull the lever on the side of the transfer case.

adjust the shift linkage

^^^ Although, mines at the end of its adjustability, now I either have to put some new bushings in there or do my own setup.

I just adjusted it hopefully that fixes it! One other clue btw my lever never moved when it would pop out of 4wd???

Meaning maybe something else did move due to bad mounts?

Trans mount seems kinda worn

cruiser54 05-30-2012 01:17 PM

How are the engine mounts?

joe1992 05-30-2012 02:12 PM

What's a good way to check those?

cruiser54 05-30-2012 04:09 PM

Look at them. The horizontal bolt should go through the center. No rubber should be missing or pooched out.

power brake in drive( or 1st if a manual) then go reverse, does the motor jump out or try? if it does they're done.

Well I put the jeep in 4wd then took off the shift lever to stop that from making it pop out. But still doing it :( I think it's internal what could it be??

cruiser54 06-03-2012 02:46 PM

How about it's bad engine or trans mounts flexing enough to move the linkage/lever when it's installed??

joe1992 06-03-2012 02:53 PM

And the front yoke has a ton of play...

What kind of play?

Didn't you state that when you put it into 4wd and removed the lever it no longer popped out?
