ryan i got the same problem. its more than likely the track bar it never did that until i put on the drop bracket. it pops all the time.

Stillwater Outfitters XJ Feb 23, 2009 10:40 AM

Ya it feels like some thing in the steering

XJSETH Feb 23, 2009 10:51 AM

yup i crawled under and checked everything several times. all looks good. even took it my mechanic (i use him for the big stuff), he said that is because of the tires and amount of lift:dunno:. so thats why im buying a RE adjustable trackbar with the mounting bracket so i can eliminate the drop bracket.

Ya i should prob get one but $$$ is a factor

XJSETH Feb 23, 2009 11:45 AM

yeah im in the same boat every couple of weeks i buy a new part for the jeep so i can do a big install in a few months. prob going to do a build thread.

get an adjustable tracbar . even if it seems tight and good, it's not. otherwise it wouldnt pop. do you have your stock one in?

COSXJFAN Feb 23, 2009 02:31 PM

Yep, knowing the trails you guys run, I'd put one in ASAP!! You already know this though!! LOL!! TB drops, or extensions, are just a temporary solution, IMHO!! Hope you get er figured out!! Peace!!

I had a bad pop,and it went away after i put a daystar controll arm bushing kit.It also improved handling and ride a bunch,I mean nite and day.I also heard the pop every time I would steer over a quarter turn, and it is gone now.

Ya still the stock one i have close to 4-4.5" of lift so which one would i have to get? and would i have to get a different one in the future when i get a bigger lift and tires?:dunno:

Make sure your track bar is torqued to stock specs (not just tight). 72 ft. lbs. at the bottom and 64 ft. lbs. at the top. If your bottom mount is not properly torqued it can cause your popping noise.

would any thing else other than the trac bar cause this noise is it some thing to worry about or is it just another noise are XJ s make with out an ajus trac bar

I have that same sound in my xj only started after i put a lift on. look start it and have someone else sit inside and turn it slightly back and forth so you can look underneath and see whats popping. For me it is my "home made" adjustable tracbar. It pops back and forth in the threads depending on where the stress is on my axle. it could unfortunately be anything in your steering and control arms so as you observe it put your hand on different pieces to feel where it pops the loudest and you can find the source
