POP! and I'm walking
I have owned a 1989 Cherokee Laredo for about seven months. This is an occasional use rig only. This truck has 266000 miles and I purchased it from the original owner. In the last two weeks after fully warmed up maybe a 20/min drive; the truck makes a small "Pop" from the engine compartment and stalls dead. The engine cranks but does not fire.
I thought first it was a fuel pump as the symptoms match. However, we have pressure at the rail. Push the stem and gas shoots out. After the truck cools down completely it will start and run perfectly. Takes a good two hours.
Since this is a renix engine I bought a new ballast resistor and changed that out at the side of the road last night; no effect. Spark wires look new spark plugs look fresh. Cap and rotor are not worn. Truck does not miss when it runs and has plenty of power. My son, (2006 Wrangler Rocky Mtn 6 speed), says he suspects the coil.
Hearing war-stories about crank position sensors make me suspicious. But, why would it work when the engine is cool? Second, is there a relay in from of the coil that could kill the spark? I don't have a code reader and really want to avoid a shop and shop time. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
One other thing, the temp guage never gets too far off of the low side maybe 1/8". I know this is too low and need to change it. Will do that soon as the weather warms up, burping these motors right takes some time.
Thanks for any info in advance

First welcome to the CF. I just want to say that ur temp gauge and running issue could be related. Is there spark during the cranking after it has stalled? Another issue to be had with any Jeep is poor electronics.
