Default Please help with my 2001 xj

Ok I bought a 2001 and have some issues, looks like maybe someone put a older head on it there's no threads in the head to hold down coil pack that's one concern now next is there's also an older manifold and exhaust not the 2001 style so now I have all these open plugs also I don't see a knock sensor but I think there's a plug for it hanging, ok now here's my Delma, I have a 1998 complete runner for parts, what do I need to take off the 98 to make the 01 run good? Do I basicly strip the 98 like exhaust, intake engine wire harness fuse box and computer and distributor and wires out and put them into the 2001, please help

I'd use the '01 to fix up the '98.

Less emissions BS, high pinion front diff, almost certainly not as Frankenstein'd as the '01, odds are the head was changed due to failure making the rod/main bearings, etc suspect...

Just saying.

I'm currently doing this with a 2000 and putting in 99 motor and computer. Looks like I only have to change a small portion of wiring harness.

The is no info on this swap. I've searched and searched and posted in a few forums with no awnsers.

I can give you more info but basically what I listed is as far as I have gotten

no help but watching. i have a noisy 00 and a sweet running 98 with 129000.
saving the 98 for this possibility. 98 is rough, 00 is nice and solid.

I have a 1998, 1999, 2000 and a 2001. I sold my 97 but it was pretty much the same as 98 but the trans and wiring harnes was different.

I've already pulled apart my 2000 wiring harness section that goes from the cam sensor to the injectors over to the computer.

I only had to cut the wires that went down to the trans as it was near impossible to remove the connectors without more effort than I wanted to get into.

From there I'm taking that section from my 98 that go's from the distributor side of the block to the injectors to the computer and installing that into the 2000 along with the computer from my 99. A 98 computer will work too I just don't have that one so using the 99 that is donating the stroker motor.

After that section of the harness is in I'll have to splice the 3 wires back into the trans side of the 2000s harness. Solder and heat shrink that.

Other than that from what I've compared it looks much simpler than I though. (Hope I don't regret saying that)

Only issue I see for those with the 2001 is the issue with the pre cats on the header and the 4 O2 sensors.

My 2000 don't have the pre cats or 4 O2 sensors.

Another thing to consider is the exhaust. 97-99 has a steel tube header and 00/01 has cast exhaust manifolds.

Benefit of the cast manifold is they don't leak. Con of them is they cause heat soak issues. (This is why 00/01 have that foil insulation near injectors)

The 97-99 steel tube header won't work on the 00/01 heads as the port shape is different also.

I have yet to try the reverse ( 00/01 exhaust manifold on 97-99)

That's what I'm going to go for on my build. I'll be adding an aluminum heatsheild under intake if this works. ( I'm tired of the poor gas mileage from cracked headers. That and the noise)

Now for you guys with 2001s, you have pre cats and 4 02 sensors. My 2000 does not. So I'm not sure how that factors in the harness difference over the 2000 vs 2001. You may just have to use the 98 exhaust system and change a little more of the harness..

Now you could just change the whole under hood harness from the 98 to the 2001. I didn't want to and figured the engineers at jeep felt the same. Again I was lucky there only having to change the one section mentioned.

I'm currently in the process of this swap so I can update, add photos or info as requested if anyone's needing any of that. I gave myself a 2 week deadline from this friday to get this swap done so I'll no more as the days go by.

Feel free to post any more info you may have that I missed.
