Default Please help... :) Flushing the transmission

Hi, first of all Happy holidays for everyone....

I have a 1998 grand cherokee laredo I6 4.0 engine with selec/track option and I'm going to flush my transmission and transfer cases, can i use ATF+4 fluid instead of ATF+3? And can I use the same fluid for the transfer case??

Also I've got the valvoline's full synthetic ATF+4 fluid, is this a recommended brand? Or there is something better in the market?

I appreciate any suggestions

I believe it is rated for the Dexron 3. ATF+4 is fairly specific to the newer model mopar trannies. If the Valvoline ATF+4 is rated as a Universal Replacement fluid that meets all the specs including the Dexron/Mercon, (like the Amsoil ATF that I use) it's probably OK. Otherwise I'd stick with the recommended stuff.

no dextron 3. use atf +4 in a grand cherokee

Shall I read the recommendations in the manual or just switch to valvoline's full synthetic ATF+4 ??

Also can I just flush the engine and put full synthetic oil in it? And what is the recommended brand and weight??

not sure if it matters. if you have the valvoline already just use that. i used cheap walmart brand in mine and it worked fine. and as far as motor oil i wouldnt use synthetic because it cleans and it will prolly cause a oil leak somewhere

Thanks for the advice guys!!!

I also have a minor issue.... I have check engine light on and it says P0455 large evap leak... Any ideas??

I've already replaced the gas cap and charcoal canister, but the code is still there... My friend who has a smoke machine said that he cannot see any leaks... Any ideas???

reset the comp by disconnecting the neg side of the battery and drive it if it stays off u fixed it if not it will come back on after the computer runs its tests

Use the type of transmission fluid that the manual recommends. If you use ATF+4 in a transmission that is rated for Dexron3, you will have a problem.

Engine oil - 10W30. Brand not important.

Use the atf4 but remember that flushing a tranny often leads to seal leakage, I would not go to a shop and have it done. I would just drain and fill and shift and drain. Or you could pop a line at the radiator start jeep and fill as it drains till its the nice clear red. A shop uses pressure that blows seals.

If you go synthetic you need to use synthetic from now on. You can not go back!

My friend has a garage and he is going to do it for me.... Probably he will drop the pan, put a new seal and add the new fluid... Is it ok??

Or you advise me to do something else

thats how u have to do it. you drop the pan replace the filter and fluid thats all

Not all shops use that type of machine. Some use one that is basically a cylinder with a piston in the middle: your old trans fluid goes into one side, and fresh fluid is forced out of the other side by your transmission's own line pressure. Uncle Ed's has this type of setup, and I'm sure there are other shops that use the same thing.

I can reset the computer with a code reading computer... I've done it before, but the light is coming back after 40 miles...

Any other suggestions?
