Should replace them both at the same time, especially if it is the inner bearing that is bad. You'll have to tear it down to get at it if it is the inner. Easier to install a boneyard axle.

As long as you keep track of where the shims come out from, and putting them back the exact way they came out you will be fine. Its not as scary as it looks, just stay focused and on task.
