Now you tell me if this a Chryco 8.25? 9" brakes. The rubber drain plug says Dana on it and spicer in stamped into the yolk. Atleast I think thats what the forked thing coming out the front of the diff. That is the yolk right? Here are some pics of it.

Well your description was pretty detailed and I was relatively sure it was a turdy five but this confirms it. Hope you didn't give more than $10 for it unless you are in need of a boat anchor. Do hope that you can take it back, b/c if they told you it was a Chryco 8.25 they took advantage of you.

I took Blue's advise and bought an 8.25 gasket and it dwarfed this thing. So that's when I knew. Cool bought the JY I got it from shipped it to me for free. I called them today and told them they sent me that wrong one and now they got another on way, that is SUPPOSED to be the 8.25 because that's what I paid for. They are pretty cool. They know the sent the wrong one. Prolly figuring I wouldn't notice, but unpronounced to them, I had you bad as@ dudes backing me up. Thanks ya'll. So now it's just put me behind a week on doing the swap. AAAAHHH

Also one last thing. If this is a Dana35 with 9" brakes, why does my Dana 35 have 10" brakes?

Oh ok. That's odd. What's the purpose behind that? Only thing I could see would be for towing and I don't think this rig came with the tow package. hrmm. I dunno. I got the right one on the way hopefully.

They were different in different years and I think it also depended upon ABS being used too.

The larger brakes were on Renix models (87-90) in the towing package. But you could get them outside of the towing package. Jeep allowed almost every option to be added to a Cherokee regardless of the package.

Here is a picture of the two different brake drums...
The 10" drum on the right also has cooling ribs around the outside of it.

I thought about that. Newer cars with ABS would'nt need big brakes. The fat guy at my Napa told me newer vehicles have bigger front brakes therefor the smaller rear drum. I dunno.

How do I know if I had to tow package. There is no hitch or anything.

Bigger brakes, a 3.73 gear ratio(on an auto) and a larger tranny cooler, that ran along the bottom of the radiator.

You don't whowey was just telling you that Jeep would allow you to select things from different packages and that some packages (towing for instance) included larger brakes as part of that packages.

Well I found the stock tag thing and I'm pretty sure it said 3.55 I'll go down and check it after I do this. I'll look under the radiator to see if I can see anything extra down there.
