Parked jeep, now wont start
Just picked up a 92 xj, it was running fine till I parked it. The next day I greased the u joints and while I was under there fiddled with the two plugs going the transfer case but that is it. Also shifted it in and out of 4wd a few times to work in some oil to the linkages. Then went to start it and nothing. It wont turn over. The battery is good, all the guages, lights, etc. work but when you turn the key not even a sound. I cleaned the grounds, battery terminals, starter connections, cleaned the two plugs on the transfer case, tried jumping it to make sure it wasn't the battery and still nothing. Any ideas?

I'm going to say starter solenoid. When they go they go... There is no warning. You could check that there is voltage going to the solenoid with a meter while a buddy turns the key.

Ahh the elusive starting problem with our beloved Cherokees.
After a lot of experience with the CPS, I'd venture maybe that actually isn't it this time. When they go out, the engine will turn over (usually) but just not catch.
Not turning over at all... probably something other than the CPS

im betting while you were messin with the two plugs you popped a fuse, i would check all your fuses, or if they werent pluged in and you pluged them in, unplug them and try it

New symptoms if these help at all. Fuel pump kicks on for only a second or two then shuts off, and temp gauge spikes when i go to start it. Checked fuses and relay, not the problem. About to clean the nss but i doubt its that because moving the shifter around doesn't do anything and had no prior symptoms.

Just curious, how did you check the NSS? Could it be possible that the plugs for the NSS (in the engine bay near the top of the firewall) may have come loose? Can you turn the key on and jumper the starter motor over and get it to run?
There's only a couple things that would prevent the engine from turing over and you're telling us you've checked all of them and they're okay. Might want to start checking them again.

Well what do you know, it was the nss. Guess it can go at any given moment because it was fine up until that day. Took it out, cleaned it and started right up. The nss was my first idea and should have went with my instinct and cleaned it in the first place. Thanks for all the help, owning two cherokees now I will at least know everything to check if I get starting problems again haha
