Painted wheels?
I've got standard grey wheels on my Jeep.... I want to save a few $$$ instead of buying new wheels and I was thinking what it would look like if I painted the stock wheels black with maybe a glossy clear coat on top...
Anyone attempt this? Not worth it? The wheels, as they stand, are a little scuffed and scratched... not very presentable.

There is a write up somewhere on here about painting wheels. You clean them w/ simple green or degreaser. You can strip the paint w/ aircraft remover(could be a PITA) or just scuff it real good w/ sandpaper. Auto parts stores have a primer called self etching primer w/ acid in it to bond to the surface. duplicolor I think makes wheel paint. Krylon fusion is a pretty good paint. It is a paint that bonds to plastic metal etc.. The most important thing though is prep. Give urself enough time so ur not rushing. I have some canyon wheels that I'm gonna do soon , when I get treadwrites. I'm gonna use satin finish..not too shiny or dull. Also check youtube under painting wheels. Hope this helps.

PROTIP:
Use packages of large Index Cards to tuck around the rim and tire. Waay faster than masking the rim. Don't forget to remove the middle plastic "hubs" before you paint.
I used Rustoleum Heavy Duty black. I used a wire wheel to remove any rust, used Rust Converter on the rims then primed and painted. I painted my rims on my '99 by the second day I had it. Hated the blah gray steelies.
Bonus cropped out pic of my painted rimz.

scuff the old paint up, primer, and the new coat, and your good to go. I personally like the textured paint , i had on my stockies looks good! Made me look like i was a pro painter, and that is what i really like about it!

I have the alum. stock wheels on my 96 and they are coated with a thick plastic. Like the lamination on a menu or something. It lets water/salt in behind it and looks awful.
Anyone tried to deal with that stuff before painting?

Rustface,
I believe the laminate you speak of is the clear coat peeling. I'm slowly working on my canyon wheels. I use aircraft coating remover. It comes in an aerosol can. Got mine from farm and fleet. Spray it on, let it sit for few, and use a scrub brush and a garden hose to remove it. Wear eye protection and skin protection, because this ***** is super caustic! Good luck!
