I've got Chrome trim, door handles, drip rails, etc. Planning on painting the body in a few months and would like black accents instead of Chrome. Would it be worth all the prep to paint the trim (will it end up flaking off) or could I use plasti-dip. I've seen people paint entire vehicles with that stuff. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this.

 

I think paint is a more permanent approach obviously. but plasti-dip is simple to do and touch up. I have done wheels, grills, moldings, roofs, ect... it holds up very well. the only place I woudl worry about is the door handles them self (regular rubbing/touching) can take its toll on anything, but IMO I think paint properly done would last longer then plasti-dip. just my 2 cents

 

IMO if you are going to take the time to do it, do it right. Plastic dip is good stuff but its not permanent. I did all my trim in phases over about a week. Took all of it off to paint it. it was alot easier than you think. Take your time and it will come out good.

 

I prefer to use PlastiDip on chrome parts. I've used it to black out a few pieces on my motorcycle that get touched quite a bit. Even my chrome gas cap looks as good as the day I sprayed it.

The great thing about PlastiDip is if it starts to wear, you just peel it off by hand and apply a new coat. I'd take that every couple of years instead of flaking paint that needs to be stripped down or sanded to be resprayed. Any chrome (rims, mirrors, trim or handles) that I have seen spray painted black always get little nicks that stick out like a sore thumb.

Is the prep work as involved as it would be if I were to paint them?

 

nope most areas wont need to be masked off as it will "cut its self" when peeled off where you don't want it or on edges. Just clean with soapy water and remove all debris, then completely dry and spray away. lots of videos on you tube.

Plast dip is awesome. But the new krylon fusion looks and holds up really good on trim, I painted my rain gutters and the trim around the windshield black about a year ago and it still looks brand new, but if I did it again I'd plasti dip it, I'm planning on plasti dipping my whole jeep in a few days . It's surprisingly tough.

 

Yea that factory plastic stuff on the rain gutters chips and flakes off, Plasti-coat would look good on that.

 

Well it's held up great. I'd just rather do plasti dip cuz its more fun to mess with. I prepped the gutters well but the krylon fusion stuff is really good ****

 

go for the plasti dip. if you dont like the way it looks just peel it off. i love the stuff

 

I've tried both paint and Plastidip on the trim. Honestly, I wouldn't use paint again. I had black coating from the factory and it was peeling off so I ground the rest off, scuffed, degreased, primed, and painted (Duplicolor) it. The paint looked ok for a while but didn't hold up and didn't look quite right to my eye. I just got my Jeep back from the painter and redid all of the trim in Plastidip. It looks phenomenal and didn't scratch or flake during reinstallation, but I have no experience with how well it holds up long term.

Plastidip is definitely awesome stuff. Especially since you don't have to do hardly anything for prep work. It sticks to any surface and overspray comes right off. Doesn't hurt to try, and if you aren't happy with it take it off and try something else.
