AL, Have you already checked for any of the usual causes of overheating in your XJ like, leaks, radiator plugged, T-stat stuck, or waterpump bad? The older style (Closed) cooling system like the one in your 88 XJ is really known for getting air pockets trapped in it, also.

the taurus fan is a good fan you need to know what style to get......but if your overheating the fan wont help.

My bad, I have my Old Guy sight going on. I could have swore I saw 88 instead of 98. So, all I said applies except for your rig having the cosed cooling system.
Since you are in a HOT region I would recommend getting a 3 core radiator as well as the electric fan. I put a 3 core radiator from CFS Radiator in my XJ and I haven't had cooling issues since.

I read somewhere that the Taurus electric fan is a good upgrade. The only issue with it is that it puts a large load on your electrical system each time the motor kicks on so, you would at to wire it to run all the time.

the taurus fan draws massive amps at start up,around 60 ish amps....I have mine installed on the mustang backed up by a bosch 75 amp relay....That fan pulls massive CFMS you should use a fan controller to turn it off and on. they are a easy score at the JY.

they send more air then most aftermarket fans... i had one on my 98 cummins actually... i have another that i got cause they are hard to come by in junk yards and i found 2 in a JY in SC so i got them both just in case... i guess i could put it in the jeep... autozone has a kit for the conversions actually... the sensor goes in between the vanes in the radiator and if it gets to the temp you set it sends power to the fan... so you dont have to stick it on a toggle switch or anything... they also have the zipties that feed through and hold the fan on the radiator because its not just going to bolt right in... i think it was only like $30 for the one i wanted...
