Your auxiliary fan should only turn on about 217* or if your Ac is running. If your AC is running and still only an intermittent aux fan then I would check your relay.... As for overheating I would replace your thermostat. Could be stuck in a semi open state and not letting enough coolant flow through your engine.

I just did an overhaul of my cooling system and I'm having the same issue. I bought the 195* super stant thermostat, thinking of replacing it with a 180* one.

Today was about 95* outside and I was driving with the AC on, the temp on the dash gauge was above 210* almost the whole time (like 230*) doesn't overheat, but I would like it to be lower for peace of mind.

I had the exact same experience as slackjaw hope someone has an answer I pulled over for 20 minutes rather than risk overheating.

Don't know how old yours is but I had the same problem on a '92. Fluids and thermostat was good the problem was the water pump. The fins or blades on the pump were worn down so much that the pump wasn't circulating the water fast enough to keep it cooled down. You don't notice it as bad going down the road. Mainly at idle where there is no air flow.
