A good 16psi rad cap plays a much larger role in boil-over protection than antifreeze/coolant. Antifreeze/coolant is mainly for freeze protection, corrosion/rust protection and water pump lubrication.

Can OBD-I systems be scanned for coolant temp?

If you dont use your a/c get rid of the condenser. I did that and my overheating problems were solved. The radiator now has unrestricted airflow.

Maybe check the belt layout. If the water pump is turning backwards you'll have overheating issues.

How many miles? Or you the original owner? If not how often did the previous owner change oil? Could be oil sludge in motor cloging oil pump. Remove rocker cover see if oil is getting to head this happened to me.
