All XJs 87+ had an overdrive. Manuals and Autos. I believe the 84-86s had a 3 speed auto but, the manuals were 5-speeds so they had overdrive, too.
You can mount a 2" receiver on the front of an XJ. I have seen them before. Some guys mount their fishing pole holders, winches that way.

Just put your Auto tranny gear selector in "3" and It will shift like normal just no auto upshift into overdrive.

I often run mine on the highway but not if I'm cruising much over 60. You should be fine, but why do you want to do that if you have overdrive? Also my dad has a 2" receiver on the front of his cherokee and we use it for everything, such as moving trailers around, winching cars or trucks up on the trailer since his jeep also has a winch up front. He also uses it as a license plate holder when not in use so you cant even see its there.

i dont have much trailering expierience, but i know when i trailer with my dads ram i have to turn the od off so when i am on cruise control and drive up hills it keeps the same rpm's and doesnt accelerate to get up the hill... does that make sense?
the light comes on the dash and says "od off"

I would imagine if you're pulling with your XJ that any terrain over perfectly level would have you in 3rd gear, anyway...especially with the stock axle gearing.

just tow in OD it wont hurt it
if it want to shift back and forth from OD to D then drop down to 3rd
I towed A 2000lb trailer thousands of miles with my old 92 Cherokee
all I did different was change trany fluid every year

I think I misunderstood the question the first time I read it. Its going to be ok if you tow it in overdrive but its going to "hunt" for gears allot depending on terrain. I tow allot myself and 90 percent of the time am in 3. The overdrive is the first one past the N the next should be 3 and the final is 1-2.

"D" on your shifter select indicator is "Over drive"
"3" on your shifter select indicator is "Drive or 3rd gear or your 1.00:1.00". Whatever you call it. Get it?
