well my engine had some really thick oil/sludge build up on it. Get some heavy duty engine degreaser gel from an auto parts store, spray it and let it soak for about 20 min then hit it with a pressure washer. recommend you do this at a car wash facility because it will leave all kinds of gunk in your yard and driveway...

Ok here is my past leaking oil, I changed out oil pressure sencer. I replaced oil filter assm orings and it was still leaking. It was dripping down by the oil drain plug and everyone thinks it is the rear seal. I just replaced the valve cover gasket with a top of the line steel with the holes and self seal on it. It was worth every penny. So my point is degrease that puppy and look for the oil that is flowing.

Mine was leaking at the oil filter mount, and I've seen a few others leaking in the same place.. just an o-ring.

I'd be looking up ABOVE first, and VERIFYING the source of the oil leak YOURSELF.

Everybody, who doesn't own or have to pay for or perform your vehicle repairs, loves to poke their noggin UNDER the Jeep and come out bearing the false bad news that your RMS is leaking.

Many mechanics, friends, people on Jeep forums who can’t see your Jeep from where they’re at, and good old Uncle Bob seem to enjoy telling you it’s the rear main seal. Has a catastrophic ring to it, doesn’t it?

A simple leak at the back of the valve cover or other source could produce the same symptoms. You don’t need to be a mechanic to figure this out. If you have good eyesight and a dim flashlight, you’re good to go on your own. Don't jump on the RMS/oil pan gasket bandwagon right off the bat.

Almost any oil leak on your 4.0 is gonna drip from the RMS area for two simple reasons.

First off, the engine sits nose-up and any oil will run back to the RMS area. Secondly, the RMS area is also the lowest point on the engine. Simple physics and the old plumber's adage apply here. "$hit flows downhill".

Valve cover gasket, oil pressure sending unit, oil filter adapter seals and distributor gasket, in that order, have to be eliminated as possibilities first.

Be sure to use PURPLE POWER, not pure power, purple meanie, etc. You can get it at most part houses for around 12 bucks a gallon. Fill your pump-up garden sprayer then saturate and pressure wash. Real purple power will clean anything!

I hit it with gunk foaming engine degreaser, drive 15 minutes to the car wash, and with old cloths and glasses, blastr' off. Stay away from the manifolds and the dizzy! Now don't just jet off! You need to watch very carefully where it's leaking. Once the oil blows and moves around you will be right back to where you started. Gotta watch carefully, right off from there, (with good light in my case). The rings often harden in the oil filter adapter.
