ok, really, What transmission fluid do i use??
i have a lovely 2001 jeep Cherokee sport with about 90k on it I have kept up on oil changes and any other fluid or filters that i could change from the day i bought it with only 10k on it, and at about 50k i payed like 80 bucks to have some jack *** at an instant oil change place to suck out my transmission fluid with a vacuum cause i wasn't sure how to do it at the time. But today is the day... I'm going to change my oil, filters, lube and grease anything that has a Zerk, and finally change my transmission fluid... but the only thing is, I cant find a strait answer as to what transmission fluid to use! some people say to use Mopart Dexron III/Mercon some say ATF+. Some say never use the ATF+ cause the factory specs call for dextron III, and I'm also reading that anything newer that 99 can use atf+ the only thing i havent read is to not use either but rather use raw honey fresh from the hive!!!!! but im sure if i look around enough i can find an artical on that..haha. so anyway does anyone have a strait answer to this unbeleavbly simple question??? let me know cause otherwise im just going to use the honey!

do you have a haynes manual? if not then dont watse your money, buy a chiltons. if you do look up the type of fluid you are suppose to use. They tell you what fluid to use based on the FSM of your vehicle.

Whoa Whoa Whoa ....
The AW-4 was used in the 01 XJ. Use Dexron (if you're not using a synthetic of some sort).
At one point ChryCo switched the AW-4 recommendation from Dexron to ATF+. Then they "silently" switched the recommendation back to Dexron.
The AW trans is a "Toyota" trans ... there was no other 4 speed transmission used by Chrysler in the XJ lineup. Now .. in the Grands, that is another story. Where are you guys seeing any other transmissions being used in the 01 Cherokee ?
Careful the information you put out there ......

from 94-2000 there was a chrysler 30RH 3 speed tranny, but it was only in the 2.5 I4
The only auto tranny the L6 motor had in a cherokee was an aw4.

According to my handy dandy 2001 factory service manual:
"Mopar Dexron III/Mercon is the recommended fluid for the AW-4 automatic transmissions."
For capacities, it says 3.5 qts for a service fill, and 8.9 qts for a overhaul fill.

You know that there are multiple types of transmissions (ones that shift for you and ones that require you to shift yourself)? It may be helpful to specify. I'm just sayin.

According to the Jeep specs manual for the 01 XJ it came with 2 trany options..NVG3550 Manual trany or AW4 auto trany. That's a Jeep Factory spec manual.

From what I've been able to find out, the XJ got the AW4 automatic straight through to EOL behind the 242ci six. Per my 2001XJ FSM, you're supposed to use Dexron II/IIE/III (or Dexron VI, I believe, is the current generation...) The use of ATF +3/+4 tends to cause clutch chatter and slippage, due to the different friction modifiers used.
The AW4 is not and never has been a Chrysler slushbox - it's actually a Toyota design, built by Aisin/Warner (and used on Toyota and Lexus RWD cars and light trucks, particularly the Celica/Supra, pickup, and RWD Toyota Van.)
If you look at the drain plug, it should still have "DII" stamped into the head, indicating the use of Dexron. Do not use any fluid that doesn't match the Dexron spec - if it doesn't say it meets it on the front of the bottle, look at the back. If it doesn't say on the back, then put that bottle down and look at a different fluid.
The Mercon V (new Ford spec) is close enough to Dexron VI that you'll often find both on the same label - but check to make sure the fluid meets the Dexron spec, or buy something that does. You'll need about four quarts for the AW4 on a drain and fill (dump in three and check - odds are, if you haven't dropped the pan, you won't need the whole fourth quart.)

I STAND CORRECTED
Where was the confusion? i assumed the NVG3550 was a replacement for the AW4 in the 2001 Cherokee. i did not know the NVG3550 was a Manual replacement for the ax-15
Sorry. NO the aw4 is NOT a chrysler transmission, so do NOT use ATF +4
