The 242 t-case has full and part time and the 231 only has part time and you have a 231. Tons more aftermarket support and stronger according to most people. I've had both and prefer the 231 because I've never found a use for the full time 4hi.

The part time is for when you may or may not need 4x4. But it is suggested not to use it on the road in (patchy) snow conditions. In short its worthless if you have 1 brain cell. And I think that t case is worthless. I would pick up a spair and what for it to go out. I wouldn't swap it cause some people have luck with them. But I would keep a spair as cheep insurence.

Basically part time is a 50/50 lock up front to rear and full time is who knows what because it varies because there is a center diff (like a full time case in a grand and they tend to go bad if you don't change the oil regularly). The one I had I could jack up one wheel and it wouldn't move even in 4 hi full time but in part time the front would pull it. (that was with open diffs)

Yup. You could get by on the beach in 4hi or even 2hi, trails depend. The ones I ride 4lo is a must but lockers are too, so it's hard to say when I don't know what kind of trails you ride.
