Default Oil Recommendations

I just purchased a 1998 Cherokee with around 52k miles. It is a right-hand drive model originally sold in Japan and recently imported back to the states. I will be using it as a daily driver as well as delivering mail out of it on a semi-regular basis. Some weeks more than others. I am going to have the oil changed and am wondering what oil is recommended. I live in South Texas so it gets extremely hot in the summer. Winters are mild but it does occasionally get below freezing. Any and all advice is appreciated!

I just switched to Rotella, after reading the following post. Very good read. If you haven’t already give it a look. I may be crazy, but I swear my 2000 with 182,000 is running smoother since...

I'm with tbone on this one. I still think 15w40 is a little heavy, so I'm running 10w30. Everyone loves rotella, but i prefer Delo semi synthetic. And I use only Napa Gold or Wix filters, the standard size 1085 on my wifes Jeep and the oversized 1515 on mine.

I'm under the misguided belief that bigger must be better. I have no idea if there's a benefit to it, i just like that big honkin filter.

15w40 is not to heavy for the 4.0. When the 4.0 was first designed it speced 50 weight oil. You could run 20w50 in it if you want to and it won't hurt anything.

15w40 is fine in warmer climates. In Colorado I run 5w40 in the winter and 15w40 in the summer. If it dips below 40*Fn I would run 5w40 just to make cold starting a bit easier and reduce warm-up times a little.

Any good HDEO (heavy-duty engine oil) like Rotella, Chevron Delo, Mobil Delvac, etc is a great choice. Rotella T6 and T4 are what I use.

Yeah.. search for the thread started by Salad on oils. He has a completely awesome right up on it. Quick question though... Are you sure it was imported back from Japan? Most Grey market imports legally done coming into the US require the vehicle to be at least 25 years old or it's flat out illegal. I tried to bring my much newer ride here to the US with me from Australia...and while they sold the same model in both countries, no one would import it because it was so new.... registration for use on regular roads here would've been impossible. Just curious.
