just snugg them over tight will cause gasket breaking issues

if it's the 1991 listed on the left side of your post, you probably still have the OEM cork gasket or silicone seal - in either case, it's probably hardened and cracked by now. Replace with the 1996-up moulded rubber gasket.

If you have a lift in place, the job is simple. If you're still riding stock, you'll need to jack up the front so that the axle can fully droop - and leave about an inch or so of daylight under the front tyres so you can force the axle down some more if you need to (the OEM bottle jack for tyre changing works neatly for this.)

The small screws down the sides and in the front cover are 1/4"-20x1/2", and the larger screws in the corners are 5/16"-18x3/4". Socket head screws can be easier to use, since you can bear down on them if you can't get the holes quite lined up.

The 1/4"-20 screws get torqued to 7 pound-feet only, the 5/16"-18 screws get torqued to 11 pound-feet. I suggest using LocTite #222 or equivalent on them to keep them from working loose again (you can also use fingernail polish or even RTV silicone on the threads if you have it andy.)

I've given fairly detailed process under hints for changing the rear main seal on several boards - probably including this one - so search around and see what you can dig up. I honestly don't feel like typing it all out at the moment...

Then it hasn't been going very long. If you catch the leak early when a screw works loose, nipping it up with a spanner will usually solve the headache. If it goes too long, the gasket will typically fail.

If you do one screw at a time, you can put some variety of retaining compound on the threads (drop of LocTite #222, maybe #242, fingernail enamel, RTV) without generating a new leak. In all cases, torque to specification given.
