I installed an mh204a extended life Mobil 1 on my Cherokee today along with oil filter adapter o-rings and Napa full synthetic 10 w 40 and sold it and shipped it down the road ... really upset about it as it was my baby but I have more important fires to tend .

To be fair that's talking about a completely different filter for a different engine. I've had a few cars with those element filters, a Saturn Ion Redline and a MazdaSpeed3 and across multiple brands of filters on both those cars I would get some deformation of the filter material. Not as bad as in the photos in your link but there would be some. And this was across OEM, NAPA, WIX, PUROLATOR, and BOSCH filters.

You do realize I'm the guy who says the Fram slander campaign is without foundation because failure reports are anecdotal...

That video almost looks staged the way those elements look.

However, if I saw personally saw collapse of any filter I would never ever ever ever ever use that product again.

That said, this PG4670 has internal metal reinforcement vs the filters in the video, which do not. And that video was 9 years ago, so things change.

A little miffed that RockAuto sells these for $1.46.

Both cars that I had that had those cartridge filters didn't have any metal in them at all. They were all plastic and filter material that was it. Even the OEM ones were plastic. And no matter what brand I used both cars used filters showed signs of being crushed a little bit. Again not to the extent shown on your BITOG link but they didn't come back out looking like they went in.

I was actually starting to wonder if you had some stake in the Fram company...

Dave, what are you saying with the Crown? I'm missing something here.

I've used Fram and others for those "element" style filters on the two Corollas I've had and never seen any deformation. If not for the bad experience with using a Fram on my Jeep, I wouldn't think twice about the filter brand for my other car. As you mentioned, 9 years is a long time, plus I suspect that the engine referenced played a major part in the filter issues in the Oil Guy thread.

That Premium Guard filter is what came in the Crown box. I bought it from Quadratec as an add-on to make it to free shipping, so it was sorta free. Or free-ish.

I guess it's OK. But huge price difference depending on where you get it. $1.46 at Rock Auto, $5.99 at Quadratec, $8.94 on Amazon (although that's free shipping so they usually up the price.

Sorta free shipping. Free-ish.

Rock Auto can eat you up on shipping sometimes though. A case of 12 filters would last me a while though

I always compare Rockauto and amazon AFTER shipping costs are factored in Rockauto is usually always cheaper even with shipping in my instances . Hard to beat Walmart for oil filter prices if in a pinch.

Same here. If RockAuto is only a nominal bit more, I'll always go with RockAuto since they always ship quickly and properly packaged. Amazon can sometimes take much longer than they indicate and often they don't package stuff well (especially if it's not directly coming from Amazon).

well.... against all my Wix praise I had this happen about a half hour ago . Vehicle came in the shop pre diagnosed as needing an engine . I told the tech assigned to get the manual oil pressure gauge and check it . He did and it read 0 psi it would blip to 3 psi then immediately drop back to zero almost quicker than you could see it . Drained the oil and swapped out filter and filled with fresh ... left the manual gauge hooked up this whole time ... oil pressure immediately jumped to 30psi .... he’s out driving it around the city as we speak with good oil pressure .... now what do we have to say ?!

Wow... that's great, so now even the trusted brands are showing signs of manufacturing flaws and poor quality control!?! I guess I'll be sticking with Mobil1 from now on.
