I was driving on the high way today and noticed something smelt burnt, I made it home no problem but I checked under the hood and there was oil coming out my dipstick. I was wondering what could cause this? Also now I cant get a reading from dipstick it shows the level at half way up the dipstick.

maybe like 5-6 quarts of oil over filled? is that possible?

he got a point lol putin 10-12 quarts of oil into ur engine and not really seeing what u doing is lil much... is kinda well sad

Ok 1st when you pull out the dipstick was it a milkey white color or just normal oil color
2nd do an oil change check the ammount of oil that came out and look at it again is it a milky white color or normal oil color.
if the oil color is normal and you only drained out the right amount of oil check your crank case breather. i once had a old chevy nova with a 350and the pcv was clogged and oil accually came up thru the dipstick and the distributor shaft and filled up the dist cap.

Blowby is caused by combustion pressure leaking past the piston rings and into the pan creating excessive pressure in the oil pan. This pressure pushes the oil out where ever it can find a place to escape. You can check for blowby while the engine is running and remove the oiil filler cap and put your hand lightly over the opening, your rings/cylinder might be getting worn. If you have a blown head gasket, you will be lossing radiator fluid. Also check that the crankcase vent tube is not blocked.

its not white or milky. Im do oil change tomorrow. It feels like somehow the tube that the dipstick goes down got bent or something. It takes a little wiggling of the dipstick to get it to go in. like its rubbing half way down.

my dipstick has always rubbed halfway down. (no pun intended)

sounds like crankcase ventilation issues. Do these cars have PCV valves? if so that would probably be the issue if your coolant wasnt milky

No they don't have a PCV, only a crankcase vent tube,
a clogged PCV/crankcase vent tube wouldn't cause the oil to be milky, a blown head gasket would.

Yeah I checked all the fluids they all look like they're suppose to, from what I could see (changing oil and coolant tomorrow). Could it of been the dipstick wasnt all the way in?

make sure your dipstick is all the way in after checking the oil, or you'll be able to check it a lot easier when it's all over the motor in a fountain of lubrication. Engine blow-by will shoot your dipstick out too, if it happens again you may have a problem. Also inspect the tube carefully, see that it is seated into to engine block by tugging/wiggle on it "lightly"

wow.... Im kill the walmart people.... I just did my own oil change, last time i did it at walmart.... It had 9 qts of oil in it.... I had to go grab tub aware after my oil catcher started to over flow... And I havent put any oil in it. It was also a real dark color... But I changed it and it runs better now
glad it wasnt milky. Did radiator fluid, little rusty color but wasnt milky either.
