Odd Lock-up Behavior
I posted a few months ago about a lock-up problem in my 96 XJ. It had started working again the next day so I didnt really worry about it. After talking to my buddy who I bought it from and monitoring when it happens, still doing it occasionally, I have came to this conclusion. If I drive it for a handful or so of miles without hitting 45mph to lock-up the converter, it wont lock up anymore that day or until it sets turned off for a few hours. I've talked to a few of my buddy mechanics and the friend that I bought it from and they have all said that if it was a solenoid or the tps it would be all the time, not intermittent and not have anything to do with not driving it at lock-up speed for a certain period of time or distance. So whats the community here thoughts on the issue? We are at a loss to the problem. Its not a big deal unless you are on a back road where you cant do 45mph and then jump on a highway at 70mph and then it doesnt want to lock-up.

So there is a possibility that the one for the lock-up would momentarily not work correctly? I know my buddy had replaced one or more of the trans solenoids after he got it. I will have to ask which ones.

Update: When I took my th350 for my Monte Carlo to my trans builder I asked him about it, he has been the trans tech at a Chrysler dealership for ~20 years. He said what it usually is, is that the solenoids get heat soaked and they stop working until they completely cool back down. My buddy replaced all the shift solenoids but not the lock-up solenoid when he worked on it. So eventually I will replace it too. But my biggest concern, he said, unlike the GM transmissions, it will not hurt the trans to drive it without the lock-up as it doesnt effect line pressure like it does in GM ODs. He said heat could be a factor but with my huge cooler it shouldnt be. I also have an idea for a larger radiator to put in it now.
