OD will not engage on 2000 Cherokee
I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee, 6 cy, 2 wd.with 59000 miles.
The overdrive has suddenly become very sluggish to engage and can take at least 10 miles or more. Once engaged it stays engaged until I slow down and then the same thing starts over again. I appreciate your input. |
It could be an upshift relay or shift solenoid. I had an 89 Dakota and OD didn't engage. I didn't fix it though, I just got 8 mpg and dealt with it till some other idiot bought it. It's worth changing those two pieces though.

Its actually your Torque Converter Lock up solenoid.......they can be tested at the TCU plug using OHMS Meter (under the dash on the driver side ).........

Thanks
I appreciate your responses!
Looks like I need to take my Jeep in to our local dealer. At least I now have a heads up on what the problem really is. I wonder how expensive this repair is gonna be? Pops |
Is the CEL on?

Not sure what you are refering to...
Hi Frank,
thanks for the post. The only light that has come on is the check emission control value light, ( this light is located on the upper right side of dash) I was told, that some 2000 Cherokee transmission were made by Toyota and some by Jeep...(??) Have you folks heard this before? Regards, Pops |
all the AW-4's are made by toyota some of the first generation toyota supras had them....not sure about the ax-15.....however a bad AW-4 transmission is rare...the three common problems are TPS,Solenoids and TCU.
