Default NSS Question

I bought a 98 Cherokee off of a guy who said that the NSS was bad. He hacked together a pushbutton that went directly to the battery and the starter motor. It worked, but was obviously a total hack.

So, I bought a new NSS, installed it, removed the custom wire to the battery and the starter motor, and now when I try to start the jeep I get nothing...not a clicking, not a sound (battery works, as it's brand new as well and I'm getting lights, etc.)

Any thoughts??

It's probably not the NSS. The PO would have likely just put a small jumper wire in the NSS connector to get by if that was the case. Since you already paid the butcher, there's no harm in calling him back to ask him what is really wrong with the starting system. Otherwise, get yourself a multimeter and start troubleshooting the starting system.

Here's a diagram of your starter circuit.

You may want to remove and check fuse #19 in the JB, and the Starter fuse in the PDC, and if okay, swap the Starter Relay with the Radiator Electric Fan relay to see if it helps.

Sounds like the PO put in a button.

One dumb, and one not so dumb question. Does the NSS "pigtail", go all the way up to a large connector sort of below the Trans dipstick? Easy enough to see that that is not disconnected, (to prevent the "hacked" power from feeding back through)

Guess this might answer the first question...do the reverse lights work?

Lastly, if you hold the key over on start and move the shifter around, jigging it maybe in park and neutral, any result?

Ken is the man here, I just couldn't help but butt in!
