Default Np242 had to get out of 4hi

Whenever I use 4wd it is hard to get back in to 2wd. I have to put it in 2wd and go forward and reverse 2 or 3 times to get it to disengage. I have put the front on jack stands and had someone work the 4wd lever inside, and it engages and disengages like it is supposed to but when I am driving it doesn't work as good. All of the dash lights for the 4x4 light up in the right positions. I have never had this problem with any other 4x4 I have owned is this a common problem with the np242?

The 242 can be a little brat changing in and out of 4wd to 2wd.. the Jeep needs to be moving forward not standing..

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case . The suggestions in CAPS are from Cruiser54.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.

I never have any problems going into or out of 4L it is going from 4H to 2wd the transfer case goes into the 2wd position and the part time light goes off but it still stays in 4H. I have only owned 4x4 vehicles so I know how the 4x4 works but i have never had this much trouble on any other vehicle. The nv271 in my truck goes into and out of 2H and 4H with no problems.

Check tire pressures and tire sizes. They must all be the same, the circumference of the tires being the same is most important.

How are your shift linkage bushings? Lots of slop?

Are you stopped or still moving when you are shifting?

Yes I shift it when it is moving, but it still does not always want to come out. It seems to come out a lot easier if I am on gravel or another slick surface. I know you're not supposed to use PT on pavement but if you try to go from FT to 2wd or try to put back into 2wd after being off road and you are pavement it hangs up in PT.
