Default np231 transfer case oil pump???

I have a 1997 Cherokee with auto trans, about 120,000 miles on it and the chain needs to be replaced. Should I go ahead and install a new oil pump in the transfer case or wait till next time. Thanks

I would replace everything that is reasonable to do when you have it apart. This is just my general policy for everything.

I wasn't aware the NP231 had an oil pump - I thought the chain and gears spinning was the only thing that moved the fluid - kind of like the differentials.

If it is cheap enough you could go ahead and replace it, but I don't think its necessary. its a pretty simple piece and not really high pressure from what I can tell.

I didn't bother when I did my SYE at 270K miles. My chain was not stretched or anything so I left it as well.

But it's not going to hurt to replace it I guess.

Unless there is evidence of abnormal wear on the gears/teeth, I personally wouldn't be concerned with replacing it. I would, however, replace the little filter, any seals that are dry/hard and definitely the range fork pads while in there
